“The path of yoga is the path of self-discovery. As our self-image disintegrates, we contact our true self. Life becomes a great joy.”
– Amrit Desai
Āsana
Asana is a Sanskrit term for the physical practice of yoga, relating to postures or poses. Asana practice can slow us down and help us bridge disconnections between the body, mind, and breath. It can also be practiced to increase strength and flexibility, improve balance and core stability, and bring a sense of mindfulness into our everyday lives.
Prāṇāyāma
A very important pathway to Yoga is proper breathing, with the aim to bring more oxygen to the blood and thus to the brain; and to control prana or vital energy, leading to the control of the mind. Using various breathing exercises and directed breathing while practising Asana we can influence the brain, nervous system and circulation, leading to increased levels of vitality and health.
Śavāsana
Savasana is the sacred time to integrate all the benefits of the yoga practice, and allow for complete relaxation. It is when our musculo-skeletal and nervous systems integrate the benefits from the breath and posture; our parasympathetic nervous system takes over - boosting our digestive and immune systems, allowing our minds to become calm and clear.
In the Pranamayakosha or the energy body, there are 72,000 nadis. Ida, Pingala, and Sushumna are the main Nadis or energy channels through which Divine energy flows. Ida and Pingala are in strong connection with the chakras - gateways that connect the subtle realms with the physical ones. Through them, we are able to express inner emotions, thoughts, words, and actions. This helps us understand that we are spiritual beings living a physical experience.
